Flower Basket Shawl in Silky Wool

Another edition of the Fiber Trends Flower Basket Shawl, this time done in Elsbeth Lavold's Silky Wool in Vertigris. I used a US 8 32" Addi Turbo needle and about 4.5 skeins of yarn. I always tell myself if I had eliminated one repeat and made the shawl a couple inches smaller, I could have used only 4 skeins. The finished size is 43" long (down the center) and 82" wide (across the top edge). That's just a bit smaller than the pattern states for DK yarn, but I also used a smaller needle than the pattern suggested for DK yarn with 14 pattern repeats. The edge didn't block up as crisply as 100% wool, but I still think the finished look is wonderful. The yarn was very nice to work with and the hand is beautiful.

Unlike all the others I made for patients at the cancer centre, since this shawl needs hand washing, it's going to my MIL for Mother's Day!

Beautiful! I love the color. : ) I recently got that pattern at Yarnover. Someday I'll knit one myself. Great gift for your MIL!

Your work is gorgeous! I love that color too. I have some stash that I want to use for a Flower Basket. I'm really itching to start.

Lucky MIL! I have been wondering how the silky wool would work for shawls. I finished a Wool Peddler's Shawl this weekend the I made with dk weight and am thrilled with the results. I so appreciate your blog showing me that I could get great results without using cobweb or lace weight. Now I just have to decide what is next - Flower Basket, Leaf Lace, Pemberly, or the Victorian Shawl. I got all the patterns in the mail last week. Your Flower Basket is beautiful and I had been looking at the silky wool in that very color for the Leaf Lace.

Sherilan, do 'em all...but not at once!

I must admit I love the leaf lace shawl, probably because it's so simple and produces a beautiful result. The Victoria and Pemberely shawls are both lovely and very easy. I think Pemberely would look better in a sport weight yarn, but in the DK-light worsted I used, it was still nice.

Such an inspiration.
You've convinced me to try silk and alpaca for my next shawl.
Best wishes,
Silvia

Silvia, that will be gorgeous! I can't wait to see it! And good on you for trying a different yarn! It will be wonderful, I'm sure.

I read blogs but don't have one nor do I comment. But I have to say I'm moved, not only by the beauty of your shawls, but by the amazing humanity of donating your art to cancer patients. Every kindness put into the world becomes a part of all the rest of us - thanks!

Oh, thanks, Jazzy!! I'm glad you took the time to comment...it's very nice of you!

Knitting to comfort complete strangers is a wonderful thing! It gives me motivation to keep knitting faster and faster!

Your knitting is simply perfect...inspirational, actually. The patients at the center who receive your handmade shawls are very lucky! I'm sure it brightens their thoughts to have a lovingly made wrap such as yours. I, too, am a Maribel and go by Mari, or Marie and have been knitting (obsessively) for about 1 1/2 years.

That is stunning! I love the color, and though I don't have a good relationship with lace (we have issues) I am really drawn to that pattern.

Thanks, Mari(bel)(e)!! Isn't it fun to have such a confusing name!!?? And Catherine, you can tame the lace beast! You just have to show it who's boss...and get lots of stitch markers!
